Quick Step’s Nikolas Maes was taken to the hospital for x-rays after being involved in a multi-rider crash in the final meters of Tuesday’s Paris-Nice stage. The X-rays indicated no broken bones, and Maes was diagnosed with trauma on his pelvis, the team said. he will decide on Wednesday whether to start stage 4.
Maes, who was part of the lead group, fell as he was coming out of the left curve that merged on to the final straightaway, a team statement said.
“I was setting up the exit from the corner when suddenly I was on the ground due to a bike that hit my rear wheel. I ended up against the barriers and the pain was immediately very strong. It’s a shame because I was in a good position for the sprint. In this moment I have a lot of pain but I hope to take the start tomorrow.”
Maes, 24, won the best young rider award at this year’s Tour of Qatar.
