The professional cyclists association has called off plans to hold a rider protest at this weekend’s Harelbeke race over the UCI’s radio ban. The CPA’s Gianni Bugno told members Wednesday that UCI president Pat McQuaid had agreed to meet with him to discuss rider concerns over the ban.
“I ask you to suspend the protest scheduled for March the 26th,” Bugno wrote. He said McQuaid “told me and assured his full readiness to meet us in the coming days to listen to our demands.
“I’ll keep you informed on the outcome of the meeting by which we will decide whether to continue our protest actions or not.”
Following McQuaid’s open letter to cyclists, published March 18, Bugno responded with his own letter the next day. Bugno’s letter promised to cancel the protest “provided that you give us a sign of genuine dialogue.”
