Alison Powers recovering from surgery after Redlands crash

REDLANDS, California (VN) – Former U.S. time trial champion Alison Powers is recovering from surgery to her broken right arm. Powers (Tibco-To The Top) suffered multiple fractures Saturday in a crash late in the stage 2 criterium at the Redlands Bicycle Classic. She could miss two months with the injury.
Powers told VeloNews in a text message Sunday night that she’ll have six to eight weeks of physical therapy after fracturing her olecranon and humerus in her right elbow in a hard crash near the end of the finish straight in downtown Redlands. The 2009 National Racing Calendar champion will remain in a Fontana, California, hospital for several days before returning home to Colorado.
“It’s a weight-bearing bone, so I can’t ‘fake it’ and put pressure on the handlebars,” said Powers.
Tibco mechanic Brian Dallas said after the criterium that Powers was disoriented immediately following the crash. She appeared to be in considerable pain leaving the venue with director Lisa Hunt, her right arm splinted.
“It hurts really bad,” said Powers at the time.
Powers told to VeloNews Sunday that she had not suffered a head injury in the spill. She was in good spirits and looked forward to beginning her recovery.
