Michele Scarponi leads Lampre in what’s an experienced team with a mix of riders for sprints and mountains for the Giro d’Italia.

One name missing is Damiano Cunego, the 2004 Giro winner, who will race the Tour de France later this summer.

Scarponi won a stage and finished fourth overall last year and is expected to be one of the favorites for overall victory when the Giro starts with a team time trial in Torino next weekend.

Scarponi has already proven he’s on solid form for a run at the pink jersey, recently winning the Giro del Trentino in northern Italy. He was second to Alberto Contador at the Volta a Catalunya in March and won a stage and finished third overall at Tirreno-Adriatico.

Behind Scarponi’s GC hopes, the team will bring veteran sprinter Alessandro Petacchi and German lead-out man Danilo Hondo for the sprints. The team hopes to win at least one stage with Petacchi as well as make a run for the points jersey.
