MARCA: ‘Caso Mosquera’ now in hands of Spanish federation

Seven months after testing positive for hydroxyethyl starch during the 2010 Vuelta a España, the UCI has forwarded the case to the Spanish cycling federation for pending action. The Spanish sports daily MARCA reported that Mosquera’s legal team has confirmed that the Spanish cycling federation (RFEC) now has the file and will consider opening a disciplinary hearing for the Vuelta runner-up. Ex-Xacobeo teammate David García tested positive for EPO and hydroxyethyl during last year’s Vuelta and was handed down a two-year racing ban. Mosquera claims that he accidentally ingested hydroxyethyl, an alleged masking agent for EPO. Mosquera has been sidelined by his Vacansoleil team until the case is resolved. “The only thing that chances now is that I have a chance to defend myself,” Mosquera said in a statement. “The case has arrived to the appropriate bodies in the Spanish cycling federation, which are the only ones empowered to make a decision.”
