Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) won Wednesday’s second stage at the Giro del Trentino in northern Italy in an intense battle to the line.

Voeckler finished ahead of Michele Scarponi (Lampre), but the Italian slipped into the leader’s jersey in a hilly contest that saw Tuesday’s TT winner Andreas Klöden (RadioShack) concede the leader’s jersey.

Scarponi crossed the line just ahead of Lampre teammate Przemyslaw Niemec and claimed the leader’s jersey. Scarponi now leads Tiago Machado (RadioShack) by 14 seconds in the overall. VIcenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) slots into third at 15 seconds in an important test ahead of the Giro d’Italia next month.

The four-day Trentino tour continues Thursday with the 170km third stage from Molino di Ledro to Fai della Paganella. The mountainous course includes three first-category climbs, with 11km final summit finish with ramps as steep as 7 percent. Scarponi will be under the gun to fend off Nibali in the decisive stage.
