Gianni Savio hoping for Giro d’Italia surprise … again

Gianni Savio, the debonair Italia director of the modest Androni Giocattoli team, is hoping to pull one more surprise at this month’s Giro d’Italia.

Savio always delivers a team that exceeds expectations, with José Rujano on the podium in 2005 and Michele Scarponi with fourth and a stage win last year. Rujano is back under Savio’s wing, but the team will also count on José Serpa and Emanuele Sella to carry its ambitions into the Giro.

“We tackle the Giro with determination and enthusiasm, certain to confront the Giro with the same passion as we have in the past,” Savio said. “Our intention is to give our fans a lot to cheer for. Serpa is a rider who is going best in training and we will divide the role of captain between Rujano and Sella. We will live by our motto: one for all, all for one.”

Savio brings a team loaded with scrappy climbers, with Serpa, Rujano and Sella all hoping to win stages and break into the top-10 overall. Rujano remains an enigmatic figure who continues to struggle to regain the magic formula that carried him to the Giro podium in 2005.

Spanish veteran Angel Vicioso, a winner at Larciano last weekend in Italy, will also have freedom to attack and hunt for stages.

Savio also announced another co-sponsor will be added to the team’s crowded jersey, with CIPI (Costruzioni Impianti Petrolchimici Industriali) signing on for the Giro ride.
