Rob Squire and Jacob Rathe went one-two in the under-23 men’s road race on Saturday at the USA Cycling national championships in Augusta, Georgia.
The two Chipotle Development Team riders were off the front with one lap to go and just a half-minute’s advantage over a chase group, but held on to claim the top two steps on the podium.
Evan Huffman (California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) rounded out the podium in third, nearly three minutes back.
The U23 men covered seven laps of the 23.7km course in the height of the Augusta heat. The soaring temperatures played in favor of the Chipotle team, which controlled the race from the midpoint.
“I usually do pretty well in the heat,” Squire said. “I was hoping for it to be hot. I got the heat so we brought the pace.”
Friday’s criterium champion, Robert Bush (Chipotle Development), attacked the field and built a lead of nearly a minute at the start of the third lap. A mechanical issue brought Bush back to the pack, after which Squire and Rathe took center stage, working together for the final 36km.
