Scott Lyttle won stage 1 of the Tour de Beauce Tuesday from a GC-shattering breakaway. Lyttle (Pure Black) won the stage over teammate Tim Gudsell and Francois Parisen (Spidertech-C10) after a 22-rider escape amassed an advantage of more than 14 minutes.

Included in the group were a number of GC favorites, including defending overall champion Ben Day (Kenda-5-hour Energy), National Racing Calendar leader Francisco Mancebo (Realcyclist.com), Pat McCarty (Spidertech), Christian Meier (UnitedHealthcare), Dominique Rollin (Canada National Team) and Alex Howes (Chipotle).

The day’s successful breakaway initially went when Lyttle, Bobby Sweeting (Kenda), Andrew Randell (Spidertech), Ben King (Team Type 1), Morgan Schmitt (UnitedHealthcare), Aaron Kemps (V Australia), Ian Burnett (Realcyclist.com), Owen Harrison (H&R Block) and Brett Tivers (Garneau Club Chaussures) jumped at the gun. When that group faded on the day’s first of three KOM climbs, a Cat. 3 summit 21km into the stage, Day and Mancebo were among the riders to jump across and push ahead.

The 22 riders went to work and with all of the power teams represented in the move, they built their lead out gradually, despite tough headwinds. The GC contest reduced to not even two-dozen men by the time the leaders returned on the 165km circuit to Lac-Etchemin, Parisien went on the attack. An effort with 10km remaining freed the Canadian with Gudsell and Phil Gaimon (Kenda) and Lyttle, King and Tivers joined them a few minutes later.

Lyttle’s kick was enough for the win and he donned the first leader’s jersey in the six-day UCI 2.2 America Tour event.
