Robin Farina (NOW-Novartis) beat Andrea Dvorak (Colavita-Forno d’Asolo) by a wheel to win the USA Cycling elite women’s road race on Sunday at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
Amanda Miller (HTC-Highroad) took third in the 120km contest, while Samantha Schneider (Tibco-To the Top) finished 10th to claim the women’s U23 title.
Alison Starnes-Tetrick (Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty 12) went on an early break with Jennifer Wheeler (Tibco to the Top II) and Kasey Clark (Primal-MapMyRide). The trio built a lead of three minutes before the peloton dragged them back.
Late in the last lap, a six-rider break got away , and Farina won the sprint, edging Dvorak and Miller.
“I knew I had to be patient,” Farina said. “I knew this was going to be a race of attrition, especially today with it being so hot. So I just wanted to wait and let some early moves go and just follow a couple certain people. It just happened to pan out today.”
