BOULDER, Colo. (VN) — Timmy Duggan called for improved rider safety when he joined Brian Holcombe on VeloLive Monday during the first Tour de France rest day. Duggan (Liquigas-Cannondale) is a teammate of GC contender Ivan Basso and provided a look inside the minds of riders facing a grueling and hectic first week in France.

Training Peaks’ Dirk Friel also joined Holcombe to discuss the week one power data from Alberto Contador’s Saxo Bank-Sungard lieutenant Chris Anker Sørensen, including his 400-plus watt pulls in the stage 2 team time trial. Friel also showed the data from Team Sky’s Juan Antonio Flecha, including his high-speed get off late in stage 9 Sunday when a French television car hit him in the breakaway.

Velo Magazine managing editor Neal Rogers gave his thoughts on the week that was in France and pointed to Andy and Fränk Schleck (Leopard-Trek) as the GC riders in the driver’s seat. Rogers also said he expected Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) to defend his green jersey to Paris and that Thomas Voekler would lose his maillot jaune in three days on Luz Ardiden.
