Tom Boonen’s rough ride in the Vuelta a España got even rougher during Sunday’s 15th stage to the notorious Angliru.

The Quick Step sprinter, who has been suffering with an open wound on his perineum that makes sitting on the saddle extremely painful, broke the scaphoid in his left hand when he hit the deck in a group pileup before the Alto de Cordal.

The accident appears to have dashed Boonen’s hopes of regaining the rainbow jersey in the upcoming world road championships in Copenhagen. He crashed out of this year’s Tour de France with a concussion and didn’t return to racing until the Tour of Poland in late July. He finished 110th at 40:08 behind winner Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale).

“I’m very disappointed,” Boonen told Agence France Presse. “My world championship preparation was going perfectly, then bang, everything falls apart in a matter of seconds due to this fall caused by bumping in the peloton.”
