ASO’s ever-growing empire saw a new addition Wednesday as officials confirmed the World Ports Classic set for 2012.
The two biggest ports in Europe — Rotterdam and Antwerp — will be “joined” in a two-day stage race set for August 31 and September 1 next year.
The race will consist of two courses of about 180km each between the two shipping centers.
The idea for the race first started to take shape in 2010, when Rotterdam hosted the Grand Départ of that year’s Tour. Antwerp later hosted a rowdy stage in that year’s Tour, and officials began bouncing around the idea of creating some sort of race along the windy flats between Belgium and Holland.
The race will be part of the UCI’s European calendar (2.1) for next season and will come after the London Olympics and will coincide with the Vuelta a España.
