Three North American-registered squads are among an early list of 16 teams slated for Continental Professional  status going into 2012.

SpiderTech, Team Type 1 and UnitedHealthcare figure among the teams that have secured second-division status for the coming season. The designation is important for teams angling for invitations to WorldTour and historic calendar events across Europe and beyond.

All three North American teams raced as Continental Professional in 2011.

The UCI has registered the 16 teams on its web site, but there’s room for more teams. Other teams likely to gain conti-pro status include Europcar, Andalucia-Caja Granada, Farnese Vini, Champions System and possibly the former Geox-TMC, if management can pull together a sponsor in time for a December 10 deadline.

Last year, 23 teams raced in the second division. FDJ has since been bumped up to ProTeam status for next season.
