Samuel Dumoulin sprinted to victory to claim the first win on European roads on the 2012 calendar in Sunday’s GP D’Ouverture La Marseillaise (2.1).

Dumoulin won out of a reduced bunch at the line in southern France to open the French calendar in what is the traditional European opener each season.

The diminutive Dumoulin out-kicked Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil), with Arthur Vichot (FDJ-BigMat) crossing the line third.

Six riders pulled clear in what was the day’s main breakaway, including Remy Cusin (Team Type 1 – Sanofi).

French racing continues this week with the first European stage-race of the season with the Etoile de Besseges (February 1-5).
