ADELAIDE, Australia (VN) – Having only touched down in Adelaide and barely time for a quick shower, jet-lagged cycling legend, Eddy Merckx, is asked to muse on a number of things: the importance of GreenEdge’s opening campaign at the Santos Tour Down Under; the milieu that now exists within professional cycling, where riders race only at certain times of the season rather than year-round, and the impact this has on races outside the WorldTour; in Europe, the wider public’s perception of cycling, and his recent chat with French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, about the topic; and how clean he thinks the pro peloton is right now.
