Team Type 1-Sanofi landed prestigious wild-card invitations to race in the Ardennes classics in April, with ASO handing down the invites ahead of French teams Cofidis and Europcar for the Belgian classics.
The news comes on the heels that TT1 earned a spot to race in the Tour of Poland later this summer, invitations that come as a boon for the pro-continental team in its second full European season.
“Yesterday the Tour of Poland, today Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. You can’t imagine how thrilled we are, a Pro Continental team from the US, to be headed to these races,” said team manager Vassili Davidenko. “With Sasha Serebryakov last week in Belgium we showed how strong we are in the sprints, and with Julien El Fares at Haut Var the week before we showed how strong we are in the hills.”
TT1 was along the list of seven wild-card bids released by ASO to start Liege-Bastogne-Liege on April 22, with some surprise choices. Missing out was Cofidis (Europcar is in for Liege, but not for Fleche), but Saur-Sojasun is in. Project 1t4i also got a start spot along with Belgian classics outfits such as Accent Jobs-Willems Verandas, Landbouwkrediet-Euphony and Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator.
Cofidis and Europcar were overlooked for Fleche Wallonne on April 18, with Colombia-Coldeportes also snagging an important invitation. They will join Accent Jobs-Willems Verandas, Landbouwkrediet-Euphony, Saur-Sojasun, Project 1t41, Team Type 1-Sanofi and Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator.
Earlier this year, Amstel Gold Race (April 15) overlooked TT1 for its seven wild-card slots, going instead with Europcar, RusVelo, Project 1t4i, Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator, Accent Jobs-Willems and Landbouwkrediet-Euphony.
