Gaimon and Guarnier grab control at Redlands

Phil Gaimon and Megan Guarnier continued their impressive spring runs Thursday, winning the uphill prologue at the Redlands Bicycle Classic in California.
Gaimon (Kenda-5-hour Energy), winner of a similar opener at the San Dimas Stage Race last weekend, stomped his way up the steep climb of Wabash Street and Sunset Drive to finish in 9:25. Julian Kyer (Juwi Solar) lodged a surprise second-place ride, at three seconds back. Exergy’s Morgan Schmitt led for much of the day and rounded out the men’s podium in 9:31.
Defending champion Francisco Mancebo (Competitive Cyclist) finished ninth.
Guarnier (Tibco-To the Top), a member of the women’s long team for Olympics selection, took the women’s opener in 11:19, beating out former world time trial champion Amber Neben (Specialized-lululemon) and former National Racing Calendar champ Alison Powers (NOW-Novartis).
Neben entered the stage fresh on the heels of a 10-hour travel day, straight out of her three-jersey-grab at the Vuelta El Salvador.
The Redlands Bicycle Classic is the opener on the National Racing Calendar and continues Friday with the Beaumont Circuit Race.
