Defending Milan-San Remo champion Matthew Goss got a shot in the arm Wednesday when his GreenEdge squad won the opening team time trial at Tirreno-Adriatico. Goss donned the overall leader’s blue jersey following the stage in Donoratico.
“That was one of the best team time trials I’ve ever been involved with, I reckon,” said Goss. “So smooth.”
RadioShack-Nissan, led by Fabian Cancellara, finished second, 17 seconds adrift. Garmin-Barracuda was third, on the same time as RadioShack. The BMC Racing team of defending champion Cadel Evans lost 58 seconds.
“Everyone went beyond our expectations,” said Cancellara. “No one knew we could do so well and that’s why we can be so proud of our performance today. That’s my personal opinion. It started with Giacomo (Nizzolo). I didn’t know he’d be able to stay with us so long. Then Gregory Rast did longer pulls with us than is normal for his past TTT experience. Then Chris (Horner) and (Yaroslav Popovich)…. just everyone. I did big pulls, which was expected, but maybe more than normal. That’s it – everyone did more than normal.”
