Ribogerto Urán (Sky) won stage 4 of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya in Ascó, Spain, Thursday. Denis Menchov (Katusha) finished second with Liquigas-Cannondale’s Sylvester Szmyd in third, all on the same time.
Urán was among the aggressors over the finish circuits around Ascó, but five riders, including Szmyd, Levi Leipheimer (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) snuck away from a group of about 25 riders on the final ascent of the Cat. 2 Alt de les Paumeres climb. The chase group, which included overall leader Michael Albasini (GreenEdge) drew the escapees in with just 300 meters to go and Urán took the victory.
Albasini retained his overall lead in the weeklong WorldTour race.
