The Tour of Utah today announced the race’s first team selections. Among the squads headed for the Wasatch Mountains in early August are ProTeams Liquigas-Cannondale and Garmin-Barracuda, as well as second division Argos-Shimano, which last week earned a nod for the Tour de France.
“We now have international teams requesting invitations to compete in Utah, and this is great for our fans and ours sponsors,” said race president Steve Miller. “The level of competition improves each year, making the Tour of Utah a true showcase for international cycling here in the United States.”
Also listed among the confirmed squads were the BMC Racing team of George Hincapie, EPM-UNE, which animated the race in 2011, and the Competitive Cyclist team of former winner Francisco Mancebo.
Missing from the first teams list were defending champion Levi Leipheimer’s Omega Pharma-Quick Step team and UnitedHealthcare, which is sponsored by the race-owning Miller family’s Larry H. Miller Dealerships.
The 2012 Tour of Utah will run August 7-12 in northern Utah and culminate with a new road circuit that starts and finishes in Park City.
