Mark Cavendish was involved in a crash during the stage's final sprint that also took out the race leader, Taylor Phinney. Roberto Ferrari made a sudden move in the sprint, cutting off Cavendish in the process. The world champion was unable to avoid the Androni Giocattoli rider, and when their wheels touched he went down. Ferrari was punished by being bumped to 192nd place. Taylor Phinney barely finished the third stage after the crash with Roberto Ferrari. He eventually crossed the line dead last, but was given the same time as the field since the crash occurred in the final three kilometers, allowing him to keep the pink jersey.
