Okay ladies, let’s be honest. Sitting on that bike seat can literally be a pain in the ass. Or worse, a pain in the most sensitive of places… In my racing days I used to joke that the “corporate penis” was trying to own me.
There are few things that irritate me more than passing up on a sexy night with my husband because my bike seat injured me. Not fun.
There are a few tips and tricks I have learned along the way to keep you cool and comfortable. It should be smooth sailing from here on out! Remember, if you are pregnant or just had a baby, there are a few other things to keep in mind. Please read my previous posts on the subject.
Avoid the red bumps
So, first thing first. To avoid any issues with ingrown hairs and razor burn, I highly recommend laser hair removal. It is an investment, but one you will be very happy with!! Any hair that grows back is super fine and you can use a tiny bikini razor if you like for touchups. Waxing is like the worst thing EVER if you spend a lot of time on the bike. It is not sanitary for one, and two, the growing phase is a nightmare.
Keep the chafe down
Some sort of chamois cream is a must. I don’t like all the artificial ingredients in most, so I use Egyptian Magic potion. It can be found at most health food stores. It is not specifically a chamois cream, but it is fabulous! The main ingredient is olive oil, so it is simple and natural.
Find the right cushion for the pushin’
Speaking of chamois, you need to have a few good pairs of shorts! Now that I can wear what I like, I absolutely LOVE any KISS chamois by Castelli. Nice name don’t you think? There are no seams in the chamois itself, and it is not too thin or too thick. I think no seams in the chamois are a must!
Play Princess and the Pea in saddle selection
Lastly, you need to have the right seat. I raced on the Fizik Vitesse saddle for about 13 years. Nothing else worked for me. I switched to a Terry cutout saddle during pregnancy, but I am now back on the Vitesse. I found that the cutout saddles actually put MORE pressure on my bones instead of less. The cutout saddles definitely relieve the pressure on the soft tissue however, so you will have to decide which area your body is asking you to pay more attention to. I love my Vitesse because it has a bit of extra “squishy” foam right where you need it. All women are different, and a seat that works for me may not work for you. You may need to try a few, but once you find one you like, I would recommend sticking to it!
If you race, and your sponsors are giving you a hard time about using your saddle of choice, start talking about your personal life and feminine magic parts and I bet they will get uncomfortable enough to let you sit on whatever you’d like. Woohoo!
