Fredrik Kessiakoff (Astana) won the stage 7 individual time trial at the Tour de Suisse on Friday. Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack-Nissan) was second, at two seconds, while his teammate Maxime Monfort was third, 20 seconds adrift.

“We are really happy with the team’s overall result,” said Astana director Dimitri Sedoun. “We took care of all the details in our preparations for this time trial, both in terms of the kit and with a long and in-depth recon of the course. Kessiakoff has got a phenomenal win here, especially considering he beat Cancellara, a four-time world time trial champion and the top-ranked specialist in the world.”

Rui Costa (Movistar) maintained his overall lead, while Roman Kreuziger moved into second overall, 50 seconds behind with two stages remaining. Robert Gesink (Rabobank) now sits third overall, at 55 seconds, while Fränk Schleck (RadioShack) fell from second to fifth overall and is tied on time with fourth-place Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), 1:04 behind Costa. Tom Danielson is the top American now, in sixth, at 1:12.

“To tell the truth, today’s overview couldn’t be better,” said Costa. “I spent the morning doing the recon with Alejandro, first in the team car and then on the bike for the last part, and there we saw it was a ITT that could go well for the two of us. It wasn’t a flat TT at all, but rather a hilly one, full of pace changes. I tried to keep a regular rhythm and give my maximum at the end. I knew, by the references I was being given, that I was riding within the best, but I didn’t know how the other favorites were doing.”
