ROME (VN) — Dutch superstar Marianne Vos (Rabobank) earned her second win in as many days on Saturday in stage 2 of the 2012 Giro Donne.
The defending GC champion finished the 6.6km individual time trial in Rome in eight minutes, 50 seconds, clocking an average speed of 44.83 km/hr.
Canadian national time trial champion Clara Hughes (Specialized-Lululemon) took second place at five seconds back, while TT and road race German national champion Judith Arndt (GreenEdge-AIS) finished third, 12 seconds back.
Vos will continue on in the pink jersey tomorrow, 15 seconds ahead of Hughes in the general classification. Third on GC at 19 seconds is American Shelley Olds (AA Drink-Leontien.nl), who finished second in Friday’s opener.
Vos’ stage 2 performance also earned her the Rock No War yellow jersey for the points classification.
Belarusian national time trial champion Alena Amialiusik (Be Pink) was named best young rider on the day, earning the white Servetto jersey. Italian national TT champ Tatiana Guderzo (MCipollini Giambenini) will wear the blue Santero jersey for best Italian rider tomorrow.
Aleksandra Sosenko (Vaiano Tepso) will wear the green jersey, sponsored by Epiù Energia and Gruppo Iseni, for the mountain classification.
Sunday’s stage 3 takes the peloton into the mountains for the first time. The 124km route brings the riders from Vernio to Castiglione dei Pepoli in the province of Bologna. Riders must scale both Montepiano (Cat. 2) earlier in the race and Passo Della Futa (Cat. 1), which summits at just 14km from the stage finish.
