SAINT-VALLIER, France (VN) — Spain’s 2008 Olympic road race champion Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) suffered a heavy fall on Monday at the Critérium du Dauphiné. Contrary to earlier reports, Sánchez remained in the race.

The 34-year-old, who was named last Friday to the Spanish team for the London Olympics, came down in a mass crash 47km into the 187km first stage from Seyssins.

Australian Luke Durbridge leads after Sunday’s prologue in what is a key warm-up race for the Tour de France.

Editor’s Note: This wire story originally reported that Sánchez had left the race. He has not abandoned.
