American Ted King is auctioning a Liquigas-Cannondale jersey from the Amgen Tour of California, signed by Peter Sagan and the entire team that participated in the race, to benefit the Krempels Center, a charity that has helped his father live with a life-altering stroke.
The organization is devoted to improving the lives of people living with brain injuries by providing resources and social engagement for people recovering from brain trauma, in addition to educating impacted families and the general public about brain trauma, tumor and stroke.
King explained that the impact that the organization has had on his family has been immeasurable.
“Words fail me when describing what the incredible resource the Krempels Center has come to mean to our family and to other families living with brain injury,” he said. “The center offers an unequaled sense of worth and social interaction to those both struggling or thriving with brain injury. The daily interactions, the positive atmosphere, the extensive list of activities and speakers is truly unlike anything else we’ve ever seen since beginning the post-stroke recovery process.”
His father’s stroke shook the foundation of the King family, and the Liquigas rider over the last few years has launched an “I Am Not Ted King” product line and various other fundraisers, including the Kremples King of the Road Challenge, to give back to the organization that saw his father through his struggle. He continues to find strength in his father’s challenges, however.
“Dad’s constant optimism, even in the lowest and toughest times, gives me so much motivation — both in life in general and definitely when I’m on my bike.”
King told VeloNews that he originally requested that his teammates sign the standard 2012 team jersey for himself, so that he could hold onto the memories the team’s five-win 2012 Amgen Tour of California. Ultimately, he decided the jersey could serve a greater purpose to benefit the Krempels Center.
“I wanted to grab the memory and signing a jersey was the first thing that came to mind,” he said. “In reality I already have these memories, though. I know my teammates in a way no one else does.”
