MADRID, Spain (AFP) — Olympic road race champion Samuel Sanchez of Spain has lost his race against time to recover from injury and is out of the London Games, the Spanish cycling federation announced Thursday.

Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) injured his right hand and left shoulder in a fall on stage 8 of the Tour de France.

“He is still suffering,” said the Spanish federation.

“He finds it too difficult to hold the handlebars and change gear. As a result the situation could be dangerous and we’ve decided that he won’t be going to London.”

Sanchez will be replaced by Jonathan Castroviejo.
