GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (VN) — Team Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies delivered Ken Hanson to victory on Saturday at the 2012 Herman Miller USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship.

Hanson outsprinted Brad Huff (Jelly Belly Cycling Team) down the finishing straight to take the stars and stripes. For Huff, it was his second consecutive runner-up finish — last year he lost a close one to Eric Young (Bissell Pro Cycling Team), who just missed the podium on Saturday, finishing fourth.

Bradley White (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team) finished third and Bissell’s Frank Pipp rounded out the podium in fifth.

Bissell brought 11 riders to the 80km championship, run on a 1.2km course, and was one of the first teams to begin massing at the front as the laps ticked down, hoping to set up defending champion Young.

But with three laps to go it was all Optum at the front, delivering Hanson to the title.

“The team was perfect today,” said Hanson, who has wins this year at the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough and Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix crits, and currently ranks fifth in the National Criterium Calendar.
