Jesse Anthony (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Kristin McGrath (Exergy-Twenty12) closed out the 2012 Cascade Classic on Sunday, winning the Deschutes Brewery Awbrey Butte Circuit Race in Bend, Oregon. Francisco Mancebo (Competitive Cyclist) and Alison Powers (NOW-Novartis for MS) protected their overall leads on the race’s final day.
The Awbrey Butte circuit is the traditional closing stage at Cascade and makes use of the same course used for the elite, U23 and junior national championships in 2010. The Archie Briggs climb was the main obstacle on the route and provided a launching pad three miles from the finish at Summit High School.
The men’s and women’s fields faced 4,700 and 6,900 vertical feet of climbing, respectively, and the top three riders in each race received time bonuses of 10, six and four seconds at the finish.
Anthony won a four-up sprint in the men’s race over upstart Ty Magner (BMC-Hincapie Development Team). Frank Pipp (Bissell) was third and Carlos Alzate (Exergy) finished fourth.
In the overall, Mancebo wrapped up his second consecutive Cascade Classic GC victory. He beat out Carter Jones (Bissell), second at 23 seconds, and Lawson Craddock (Bontrager-Livestrong), who finished the six-day race third overall, at 31 seconds down.
McGrath won the 68-mile women’s circuit race solo. She crossed the line seven seconds ahead of her Exergy teammate Theresa Cliff-Ryan, who led the field home for second. Cliff-Ryan spearheaded a 22-woman pack, from which GC leader Alison Powers (NOW-Novartis for MS) finished third.
Powers wrapped up her victory in the overall, beating Carmen Small (Optum) by eight seconds. U.S. road champion Megan Guarnier (Tibco-To the Top) held on to third place overall, 22 seconds back.
