Marianne Vos (Rabobank) may have relinquished the maglia rosa to Evelyn Stevens (Specialized-lululemon) on Sunday, but she didn’t let it stray from her grip for too long.
Vos took victory in stage 4 of the 2012 Giro Donne on Monday as she held on with the lead pack up the steep Gordaiolo climb and attacked on the descent, crossing the line alone at Montecatini Alto.
Vos covered the 98km course in 2:44:59, well over a minute ahead of second-place Emma Johansson (Hitec Products Mistral Home). Finishing third on the day was Tatiana Guderzo (MCipollini Giambenini), who outsprinted fourth-place Stevens at the finish.
With the win, Vos found herself back at the top of the general classification, with yesterday’s stage winner, Stevens, second in GC, at 1:31 back.
Emma Pooley (AA Drink Leontien.nl), whose performance on Monday earned her the green Epiù Energia-Gruppo Iseni jersey for the mountain classification, is third in GC, at 2:07 behind Vos.
During her day out of pink, Vos sported the yellow Rock No War jersey for the points classification; she is still in control of the yellow jersey after stage 4.
The best young rider jersey went to Elisa Longo Borghini (Hitec Products Mistral Home), who finished 10th, while the blue Santero jersey for the Italian classification went to seventh-place Fabiana Luperini (Faren Honda). It will be Luperini’s second day in blue, as she also finished second in Sunday’s stage 3.
Tuesday’s stage gives riders a break from the mountains, benefiting sprinters with a flat 118.7km route from Polesella to Molinella.
