SAINT-JEAN-DE-MAURIENNE, France (AFP) — Frenchman David Moncoutie (Cofidis) ended what was billed as his final Tour de France Friday after suffering injuries in a crash on the hilly 12th stage, organizers announced.

Moncoutie had been part of a morning breakaway but crashed on the descent of the Col du Grand-Cucheron, one of two Cat. 1 climbs inside the first 80km of the 226km stage — the longest in the race.

Moncoutie, 37, crashed on a bend while chasing a leading group and remained prone on the ground before being attended to by race medical staff.

Before his 11th Tour campaign Moncoutie had said it would be his final participation.
