VALKENBURG, Netherlands (AFP) — A day after her 18th birthday, Great Britain’s Lucy Garner won her second women’s world junior championship road race on Friday on the circuit around Valkenburg, Netherlands.

The British favorite justified her status after five laps and 80km and brought Britain a second gold medal in the junior contests at the worlds after Elinor Barker won the time trial earlier this week.

Garner crossed the line several lengths ahead of Eline Brustad of Norway and Italian Anna Stricker. Garner is the first junior to win gold twice since her compatriot Nicole Cooke (2000 and 2001), the 2008 Olympic champion in Beijing.

Jessy Druyts (Belgium), the silver medalist last year in Copenhagen, finished fifth.
