Cal Giant-Specialized mechanic Jordi Cortes awoke Monday morning in Santa Cruz, California, to find a window of his team van broken and his tool box, multiple sets of wheels and other items missing.

Cortes told VeloNews that the assailants removed “my personal tools, took my personal GPS… they stole a couple pairs of our new Zipp 303 ‘cross wheels, disc (brake) wheels… probably about six grand worth of stuff.”

The theft, which Cortes said spared “four $10,000, irreplaceable ‘cross bikes, that you can’t get more of, and thirty sets of wheels” in the cable-locked rear of the van, came as Cortes was preparing team bikes and equipment for the upcoming Cross After Dark finale at Los Angeles Cyclocross on December 1 and the Trek Gran Prix of Cyclocross Deschutes Brewery Cup in Bend, Oregon, on December 8 and 9. Cortes is the head mechanic for the Cal Giant-Specialized road and cyclocross squads, the latter of which features Meredith Miller and Yannick Eckmann among its five-rider roster.

“It’s the first time we’ve ever had anything broken into like this, at least as far as I know of, so everybody’s kind of scrambling to figure out what to do,” Cortes said. “It’s a handful of years of tool accumulation.”

Anyone with information on the theft is encouraged to call the Santa Cruz Police Department regarding case number 125-10466 at 831-420-5900.
