DIEGEM, Belgium (VN) — Katerina Nash (Luna) overcame Belgian champion Sanne Cant (Enertherm-BKCP) on Sunday to win the Superprestige round in Diegem.

Lucie Chainel took third.

Cant, Nash, Chainel and Sabrina Stultiens immediately formed a leading group in Diegem, trailed by Ellen Van Loy (Melbotech). Cant and Nash then escaped from Chainel and Stultiens, and in the final round Nash proved the stronger of the two.

“I am very happy with my fifth win of the season, even though all the top riders were not here at the start,” said Nash.

“I felt pretty good on the uphills. so I figured this is my chance. I didn’t want to leave it for the sprint or any kind of tough corners that are back around the stadium. So I just attacked on one of the small uphills and got a small gap that I kept all the way to the finish.”

Cant, who won the Azencross in Loenhout on Friday, likewise was disappointed that her main rivals for the overall in the Bpost Bank Trofee series, Nikki Harris (Telenet-Fidea) and Helen Wyman (Kona Factory Team), did not race in Diegem.

“Whether that will make a difference, we will see Tuesday [in Baal],” says Cant. “I think it’s unfortunate that they were not here.”

She added that their absence motivates her for the sixth round of the Bpost series in Baal, which she feels will be key to overall victory in the series.

Race note

Americans Meredith Miller (Cal Giant-Specialized) and Amy Dombroski (Telenet-Fidea) both cracked the top 10 in Diegem, finishing seventh and ninth, respectively..
