Alberto Contador wins the penultimate stage in the Tour de San Luis.

MIRADOR DEL SOL, Argentina (AFP) — Alberto Contador (Saxo-Tinkoff) won the penultimate stage of the Tour de San Luis on Saturday, edging race leader Ricardo Diaz (San Luis Somos Todos) by just two seconds.

Alex Diniz (Funvic Brasilinvest) took third in the same time as Diaz.

A five-man break went clear 48km into the 156.6km sixth stage from Quines to Mirador del Sol: Adriano Malori (Lampre Merida), Diego Rosa (Androni Giocattoli), Mauro Finetto (Vini Fantini), Pieter Weening (Orica-GreenEdge) and Marc De Maar (UnitedHealthcare).

The escapees built a little over a minute’s advantage but the peloton eventually reeled them in, and Contador proved the strongest on the category-1 climb to Mirador del Sol.

Diaz now leads the race by 33 seconds over Tejay Van Garderen (BMC Racing) and 39 seconds over Diniz.

The Tour de San Luis ends Sunday with a 154.7km stage from San Luis to Juana Koslay.
