Alex Diniz (Funvic Brasilinvest–São José dos Campos) won stage 3 of the Tour de San Luis on Wednesday at Mirador del Potrero, Argentina. Mauro Santambrogio (BMC Racing) was second in the mountaintop finale ahead of Michal Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma-Quick Step).
American Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing) was fifth on the stage.
Diniz, who served a two-year ban for a positive EPO test in 2009, took a narrow lead in the general classification with his stage win. He leads Santambrogio, Kwiatkowski and Lotto-Belisol’s Jurgen Van den Broeck by 24 seconds. Bart De Clercq (Lotto) and van Garderen are a further one second back.
The Tour de San Luis continues Thursday with the 19.2km stage 4 individual time trial in San Luis.
