SAN LUIS, Argentina (VN) —Ricardo Diaz (San Luis Somos Todos) took the overall title in the Tour de San Luis on Sunday as Mattia Gavazzi (Androni Giocattoli) won the final stage.
Gavazzi edged out Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and Francisco Ventoso (Movistar) to win the 154.7km stage 7 from San Luis to Juana Koslay.
For the 23-year-old Diaz, a native of Salta, Argentina, winning the overall was the biggest victory of his career. The former Footon-Servetto rider never won a stage, but placed second in the fifth and sixth stages.
American Tejay Van Garderen (BMC Racing) took second overall, 33 seconds behind Diaz. Alex Diniz (Funvic Brasilinvest) rounded out the overall podium in third place.
Van Garderen said a top finish overall was not his original goal.
“I was actually thinking I was going to get the stage win in the time trial and I wasn’t that keen for even going for the GC,” he said. “But [sport director] John Lelangue and the team really motivated me to get it going.
“I was actually surprised at how up there I was — and how not up there I was in the time trial. My climbing legs feel really good and being able to gauge myself against some of the other competitors that I’ll be facing when I get to Europe was good. I think I’m stacking up pretty well.”
