Leigh Howard (Orica-GreenEdge) notched his second Challenge Mallorca win of the week on Wednesday, coming up victorious in the Trofeo Platja de Muro.
Maarten Wynants (Blanco) was second. Davide Cimolai (Lampre-Merida) finished third in the final race of the four-day series.
The 169km stage from Alcudia to Playa de Muro was marked by the abandonment of 2012 Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins (Sky). Wiggins, who was making his first trip to the Balearic Islands of the season, decided to retire when he seemed to suffer no injury.
“The plan today was again to make it as hard a day as possible for the other teams — essentially a training exercise for the likes of classics guys such as Stuey [O’Grady] and Sebastian [Langeveld],” Howard wrote on his website. “I was climbing well and Michael [Matthews] was up the road, so it panned out well for us. Our director Neil Stephens gave me the green light to hit out in the finale and it worked for us.”
