Jalabert undergoes successful surgery to repair broken leg, hand

PARIS (AFP) — Laurent Jalabert, former points and mountains jersey winner at the Tour de France, underwent successful surgery on Monday night to repair multiple fractures suffered in a car/bike collision in Montauban, France, the Clinique du Pont de Chaume de Montauban announced on Tuesday.

“Laurent Jalabert was treated last night for a broken leg, and several humerus fractures of the hand. The intervention lasted for more than two hours and went very well,” the clinic said in a statement.

The winner of the 1995 Vuelta a España and three-time Paris-Nice champion “returned to his room, where he needs to rest. … His stay in the clinic is scheduled for five to six days,” the statement continued. “He can start his rehabilitation quickly, possibly in a specialized center for this purpose, if he wishes.”

Jalabert, 44, was hit by a car on Monday while riding a bicycle near his home.
