OUDENAARDE, Belgium (VN) — Olympic and world road champion Marianne Vos (Rabobank) won the 10th edition of the women’s Tour of Flanders on Sunday.

Vos edged Elenora Van Dijk (Specialized) and Emma Johansson (Orica) at the end of the 127km race, which began and finished in Oudenaarde.

It was the first win for Vos, who had finished second in 2010 and third in 2007 and 2011.

Vos said she had been sick and wasn’t sure how she would feel during the race, but felt good once she got going. The team strategy was to control the race and attack after the Kwaremont if nobody else had gone first. Nobody did, so Vos had a go.

Van Dijk, Emma Johansson and Elisa Longo Borghini countered, then shot past, but Vos was able to latch on and proved strongest at the finish, taking the win in 3:33:21.

Race note

Megan Guarnier (Rabobank) was the top American, finishing 18th at 4:33.
