Frenchman Maxime Bouet (Ag2r La Mondiale) sprinted to victory in stage 1a of the Giro del Trentino on Tuesday, finishing ahead of Josef Cerny (CCC Polsat Polkowice) and Michael Rodriguez (Columbia).
The trio was part of an early breakaway group that included eight riders, which was able to stay in front to the finish. The peloton finished almost seven minutes behind.
Bouet leads Cerny by two seconds and Rodriguez by four seconds in the GC standings after the morning stage, which measured 129 kilometers of mostly flat road except for a Category 2 climb late in the course. After beginning the day in Lienz, Austria, the riders went down the other side of the climb and descended back into Lienz for the finish.
Later Tuesday, a 14.1km team time trial will take the riders around Lienz for stage 1b.
The race then resumes Wednesday with the 225km stage 2, a mountain day with two Cat. 1 climbs — one midway through and another at the finish.
