APELDOORN, Netherlands (VN) — Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) won the 48th edition of the Ronde van Gelderland on Sunday.

Sarah Gillow (Orica-AIS) was off the front in the final 30km of the 140km race when the sprinters’ teams began working to pull her back.

As the chasers drew to within 30 seconds of the leader, Annemiek van Vleuten (Rabobank) jumped across to her. With 10km remaining, Argos-Shimano took control of the pursuit in hopes of delivering Wild to the victory.

In the end, the escapees were retrieved and Wild repaid her teammates for their efforts by sprinting to the victory ahead of Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle-Honda) and Chloe Hosking (Hitek Products UCK).

“It was a very tough race,” said Wild. “In the end, we were forced to take control and the whole team, especially Willeke Knol and Amy Pieters, made sure the break was caught and we could prepare ourselves for the sprint. I am really satisfied about our performance today.”

Carmen Small (Specialized-lululemon) was the top American, finishing fourth in the same time as the leaders.
