USA Pro Challenge sues Exergy Development Group — Denver Post

The Denver Post reported Wednesday that organizers of the USA Pro Challenge had filed a civil complaint against sponsor Exergy Development Group. The alternative energy conglomerate was a backer of the event in 2011 and 2012, but, the race claims, it failed to make three payments totaling more than $1 million between Sept. 1, 2012 and Feb. 15, 2013.

According to the Post, organizers of the Colorado stage race filed suit under the plaintiff name Classic Bicycle Racing on April 10. Organizers seek $2.5 million from the Idaho-based company.

Exergy has previously run afoul of operators at the Exergy Tour in Boise, Idaho, and the U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross. Organizers of the latter gave up control of February’s UCI Elite Cyclocross World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky, after Exergy failed to fulfill its financial obligation to that event. The women’s Exergy Tour was canceled earlier this year when the company could find no promoter to organize the event.

Exergy continues to back a professional women’s team, but closed it’s men’s team in late 2012.
