Domestic Intel: Olds, Tibco head to China; Brown third in USOC voting

Brown third in USOC Athlete of the Month voting

Nathan Brown (Bontrager) was third in the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Athlete of the Month voting for April. Brown was second at the espoirs Liège–Bastogne–Liège on April 13.

Gymnast Paul Ruggeri earned top honors in the men’s voting, ahead of paralympic swimmer Ian Silverman. Ruggeri won two gold medals at the International Gymnastics Federation World Cup, held April 27-28 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Powers, Mancebo lead National Racing Calendar

Alison Powers (NOW-Novartis for MS) and Francisco Mancebo (5-hour Energy-Kenda), both stage winners at the Silver City’s Tour of the Gila last week, led the National Racing Calendar standings announced this week by USA Cycling. The NRC continues June 2 with the one-day Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic in Philadelphia and wraps up at the Thompson Bucks County Classic on September 7 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Organizers preview Firebird 40 and Firebird La Femme course

Organizers of the Eagle Outside Festival and Firebird 40 mountain bike race released a POV preview video for the event on Thursday.

The Firebird 40 takes place in Eagle, Colorado, on Saturday, May 11. The Firebird La Femme takes place on Sunday, May 12.

Kline, Valente win at Dana Point Grand Prix

Shane Kline (Smartstop-Mountain Khakis) and Jennifer Valente (Exergy Twenty16) took victories at the Dana Point Grand Prix on Sunday in southern California. Kline topped Justin Williams (Cashcall Mortgage) and U.S. criterium champion Ken Hanson (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) in the National Criterium Calendar contest. In the women’s race, Valente edged Shelby Reynolds, whose Helens teammate and former professional Suzanne Sonye was third.

Tibco sends four riders to Chongming Island races

Women’s squad Tibo-To the Top has sent four riders, including defending champion Shelley Olds, to the Tour of Chongming Island World Cup and stage race in China. The stage race opened Wednesday. The three-day event wraps on Friday and the World Cup race takes place on Sunday.

Olds used the World Cup event in 2012 to finalize her case for selection to the U.S. National Team for the London Olympics.
