Hesjedal re-signs with Garmin through 2015

2012 Giro d’Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal re-signed with Garmin-Sharp through 2015, the team announced Friday.

The Canadian became Garmin’s — and Canada’s — first-ever grand tour winner with a brave ride at last year’s Giro. Hesjedal, a former mountain bike racer, said he was happy to extend with Jonathan Vaughters’ outfit.

“I am very excited to continue with Garmin-Sharp for another two years. I have had the biggest results of my career riding for this team and I’m very happy here,” Hesjedal said in a team release.

Hesjedal joined the team in 2008 and has been a consistent performer ever since, including a sixth-place overall at the Tour de France in 2010, second at Amstel gold in 2010, stage wins at the Vuelta a Espana and the Amgen Tour of California, and numerous team time trial wins, a Garmin-Sharp specialty.

“Ryder is an important part of the team, not just because of his great results and exceptional talent but also because of who he is,” said Vaughters, the team’s CEO, in the release. “We have seen his talent grow over his years with us, something we know will continue. He is a grand tour champion and an important part of the fabric of Garmin-Sharp. We are thrilled that he will continue with us.”

Hesjedal was unable to defend his Giro crown last month, having to abandon the race due to an upper respiratory infection. He’s due to start the Tour de Suisse this weekend. Garmin-Sharp’s Tour de France plans aren’t yet publicly known.
