Kimberley Wells (Pure Energy) and Jake Keough (UnitedHealthcare) took wins Thursday night in the opening stop of the Tour of America’s Dairyland. Wells and Keough were victorious as the National Criterium Calendar stopped off in the Village of Shorewood, Wisconsin, for the Shorewood Criterium Cycling Classic.

Defending Dairyland champion Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom) walked away with prime cash, but had to settle for third in the women’s race, with Jen Purcell (Colavita-Fine Cooking) finishing second to Wells in the bunch sprint.

In the men’s race, the UnitedHealthcare train drove over the backs of three breakaway riders — Frank Pipp (Bissell), Sergio Hernandez (Predator Cycling), and Hunter Grove (Southern California Velo) — in the race’s final moments. As the blue-clad UHC criterium horses have done all year, they stormed the podium, with Hilton Clarke finishing second and Luke Keough third.

The Tour of America’s Dairyland continues Friday with the East Troy Cycling Classic, an NCC event, in East Troy, Wisconsin.
