Francisco Mancebo wins stage 3 of the 2013 Tour de Beauce

(ST-GEORGES, QC) Francisco Mancebo (5-hour Energy) won a difficult third stage at the Tour de Beauce on Thursday, which featured the steep Mont-Mégantic climb.

With the stage win, Mancebo, the overall Tour de Beauce winner in 2011, took hold of the yellow jersey as race leader, previously worn by Canadian cyclist Guillaume Boivin.

With the opening two stages won by a bunch sprint, the general classification of the 28th Tour de Beauce was completely shuffled. Mancebo took yellow with a five-second lead over his closest competitor, Matthew Cooke of Century Road Club Association. Boivin kept the white jersey as the points classification leader.

A breakaway of three riders – Rob Britton (Canadian National), Javier Megias of (Novo Nordisk) and Jason McCartney (Bissell) – was the most serious on the day, taking a maximum lead of 3:35 over the peloton before the second of three categorized climbs, 120km into the race.

The three-rider break was eventually caught, near the top of the second categorized climb, and the peloton rode together until the bottom of Mont-Mégantic National Park.

At the base of the last of three categorized climbs, a group of 10 riders rode clear of the bunch. Midway through the climb, the group was narrowed down to six. With only a few meters left, Mancebo passed Cooke for the stage win. Carter Jones (Bissell) finished third, shortly behind.

Friday, a 20km time trial will be held at St-Benoit-Labre.
