Wiggins: Sky ‘didn’t really need me’ — BBC
Bradley Wiggins (Sky) has said that missing this year’s Tour de France was “the best thing” and affirmed that 2013 winner Chris Froome deserves to lead the team next year.
Speaking to reporters at a charity ride on Sunday, the 2012 Tour winner said Froome is poised to lead Sky again next July.
“I think he’s earned the right to lead the team again next year and do it all again,” Wiggins told BBC.
“Going in, he was undoubtedly the favorite. Having seen what he’d been doing leading up to the Tour, it was just a case of doing what he’d been doing all year. And he did that, it was incredible,” Wiggins continued. “The team showed that they didn’t really need me. They did the job.”
Wiggins, racing this week at the Eneco Tour, said he’s gaining weight ahead of a run at the world time trial title, his top goal at the end of the season.
“Carrying extra weight is hard, but once you get into the time trial — and I won by a minute — it pays off,” he said, referring to his time trial win at the Tour of Poland.
