MADRID (AFP) — With the third grand tour of the season, the Vuelta a España, set to open Saturday with a team time trial from Vilanova de Arousa to Sanxenxo, Vincenzo Nibali, Joaquim Rodríguez, and Chris Horner are among the big names set to face off on a route that includes 13 mountain stages.

Giro d’Italia winner Nibali (Astana) is looking to double on his success in his homeland back in May with his second Vuelta title, having won the three-week Tour of Spain in 2010.

Spanish hopes will center on 2009 winner Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Rodríguez (Katusha), as two-time winner Alberto Contador (Saxo-Tinkoff) decided against riding after a testing Tour de France last month in which he finished fourth.

Horner (RadioShack-Leopard), meanwhile, returned to racing after four months lost to a knee injury with a second-overall result at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah earlier this month.

Sky confirmed on Tuesday that the Colombian duo of Giro runner-up Rigoberto Urán and Sergio Henao will take the start on Saturday, with Henao taking leadership duties for the first time in a three-week tour.

“The Vuelta is a huge race for me and an important and prestigious event,” Henao said in a press release. “It is an honor to be picked as the team leader and it’s a responsibility that I want to try and fulfill. I respect what the team has asked of me and I want to try and make the most out of the opportunity.”

The race starts on Saturday in the northeast region of Galicia and will finish in Madrid on September 15 after 21 stages.
